It’s every craft brew nerd and drinker’s favourite time of the year! If you’re not familiar with Santa Rosa’s Russian River Brewing, you may not know what I’m referring to. Russian River brews the much sought after beer, Pliny the Elder, a double IPA, that has a huge following with debatable hype. However, in February, they release a very limited edition beer, and appropriately named after Pliny’s son, Pliny the Younger, a triple IPA. This beer is only available for two weeks out of the year, and is only sold in pints. Normally at Russian River, you are able to purchase most of their beers in growlers-to-go or in bottles, however PtY you are only able to purchase it in pints for tasting at their brewery, and at a few local bay area bars as well. I have a few friends who have made the pilgrimage before, and have suggested getting in line close to three hours before opening. In the past, San Francisco’s famous Toronado ale house, has also hosted tastings as well. They were able to try the rare beer there. However, this year it seems that Toronado will NOT be selling PtY, which would fall into the giant SF Beer Week festivities. Right now, I’m currently hoping that my boyfriend and I will be able to get into Santa Rosa early on February 1st to wait in a line possibly similar to Black Friday. I have a feeling that this could be more appropriately titled “BlackOUT Friday,”though.
Have you sought out the famous Pliny the Younger before? What were your thoughts? Any great stories to write home to?
